Al-Muddaththir · 1
1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ
And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.
Meccan
74. Al-Muddaththir
المدثر · The Cloaked One · 56 ayahs
Al-Muddaththir · 2
2
قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little.
Al-Muddaththir · 3
3
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire.
Al-Muddaththir · 4
4
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
And food that chokes and a painful punishment -
Al-Muddaththir · 5
5
وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down.
Al-Muddaththir · 6
6
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.
Al-Muddaththir · 7
7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ
But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.
Al-Muddaththir · 8
8
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ
Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white-haired? [1]
Al-Muddaththir · 9
9
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
The heaven will break apart therefrom; [1] ever is His promise fulfilled.
Al-Muddaththir · 10
10
عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ
Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.
Al-Muddaththir · 11
11
ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا
Indeed, your Lord knows, [O Muḥammad], that you stand [in prayer] almost two thirds of the night or half of it or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And Allāh determines [the extent of] the night and the day. He has known that you [Muslims] will not be able to do it [1] and has turned to you in forgiveness, so recite what is easy [for you] of the Qur’ān. He has known that there will be among you those who are ill and others traveling throughout the land seeking [something] of the bounty of Allāh and others fighting for the cause of Allāh. So recite what is easy from it and establish prayer and give zakāh and loan Allāh a goodly loan. [2] And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allāh. It is better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
Al-Muddaththir · 12
12
وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
O you who covers himself [with a garment], [1]
Al-Muddaththir · 13
13
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا
Arise and warn.
Al-Muddaththir · 14
14
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا
And your Lord glorify.
Al-Muddaththir · 15
15
ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
And your clothing purify.
Al-Muddaththir · 16
16
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا
And uncleanliness [1] avoid.
Al-Muddaththir · 17
17
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
And do not confer favor to acquire more [1].
Al-Muddaththir · 18
18
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
But for your Lord be patient.
Al-Muddaththir · 19
19
فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
And when the trumpet is blown,
Al-Muddaththir · 20
20
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
That Day will be a difficult day
Al-Muddaththir · 21
21
ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
For the disbelievers - not easy.
Al-Muddaththir · 22
22
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
Leave Me with the one I created alone [1]
Al-Muddaththir · 23
23
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
And to whom I granted extensive wealth
Al-Muddaththir · 24
24
فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
And children present [with him]
Al-Muddaththir · 25
25
إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
Al-Muddaththir · 26
26
سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
Then he desires that I should add more.
Al-Muddaththir · 27
27
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
Al-Muddaththir · 28
28
لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ
I will cover him with arduous torment.
Al-Muddaththir · 29
29
لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ
Indeed, he thought and deliberated. [1]
Al-Muddaththir · 30
30
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
Al-Muddaththir · 31
31
وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
Al-Muddaththir · 32
32
كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ
Then he considered [again];
Al-Muddaththir · 33
33
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
Then he frowned and scowled;
Al-Muddaththir · 34
34
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ
Then he turned back and was arrogant
Al-Muddaththir · 35
35
إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
Al-Muddaththir · 36
36
نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ
This is not but the word of a human being."
Al-Muddaththir · 37
37
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
I will drive him into Saqar. [1]
Al-Muddaththir · 38
38
كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
And what can make you know what is Saqar?
Al-Muddaththir · 39
39
إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
Al-Muddaththir · 40
40
فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.
Al-Muddaththir · 41
41
عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
Over it are nineteen [angels].
Al-Muddaththir · 42
42
مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.
Al-Muddaththir · 43
43
قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
No! By the moon.
Al-Muddaththir · 44
44
وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ
And [by] the night when it departs.
Al-Muddaththir · 45
45
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ
And [by] the morning when it brightens,
Al-Muddaththir · 46
46
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Indeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions].
Al-Muddaththir · 47
47
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ
As a warning to humanity -
Al-Muddaththir · 48
48
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
To whoever wills among you to proceed [1] or stay behind.
Al-Muddaththir · 49
49
فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained [1].
Al-Muddaththir · 50
50
كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
Except the companions of the right, [1].
Al-Muddaththir · 51
51
فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
Al-Muddaththir · 52
52
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
About the criminals,
Al-Muddaththir · 53
53
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
Al-Muddaththir · 54
54
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
Al-Muddaththir · 55
55
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
Nor did we used to feed the poor.
Al-Muddaththir · 56
56
وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
